Rollstone Gala May 15, 2019 Honors Colleen West

The Rollstone Foundation

Supporting the Adoption of Special Needs Children Worldwide

news

Colleen WestA recognized leader in both business and charitable organizations, Colleen West has been named the 2019 Honoree for the annual Rollstone Gala to be held May 15 at Timber Point Country Club in Great River, NY.

Many will recognize Colleen as a visionary businesswoman. After founding Enright Court Reporting, Inc. in 1991, Colleen expanded the business in 1998 to include a web-based transcription service that provides services to a broad range of professions; including legal, medical practices, hospital networks and insurance carriers.

Colleen dedicates her life to lifting up others, especially those in need, and her efficacy in raising funds for and providing leadership to various charitable organizations is widely recognized. A long-time member of the Rollstone Board of Directors, Colleen was named its President in 2018.

“Colleen’s caring and generous heart is evident to anyone who knows her,” says Michael Dawidziak, co-founder of The Rollstone Foundation. “This, combined with being a self-made successful businesswoman and a recognized leader in the world of philanthropy make her uniquely qualified to serve as President of the Board of the Rollstone Foundation.”

“Since its founding in 2008 and even before she was a board member, no one has been more generous to the Rollstone Foundation than Colleen West,” notes Dawidziak

Colleen also is a member of the Sayville and Patchogue Chambers of Commerce as well as other civic organizations. Since 2007, she has been a member of the Board of Directors of United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Suffolk County, serving as Chair from 2009 through 2017. She was UCP’s Dinner Gala Honoree in October 2009. Colleen was named “Woman of the Year 2009” by Times Beacon Record Newspapers on Long Island. She has served on fundraising committees for the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Luncheon, Girls Inc. of Long Island, Victims Information Bureau of Suffolk and Splashes of Hope. She has been featured on Cablevision’s “Women of the New Century” and is a member of the Energeia Partnership — The Academy for Regional Stewardship at Molloy College, a 2-year program from which she graduated in January 2010.

Rollstone is among several organizations to honor Colleen leadership and altruism, which include the National Association of Women Business Owners, Girls Inc. of Long Island and the Long Island Center for Business and Professional Women. Colleen was named one of Long Island’s 50 Most Influential Women by the Long Island Business News two times and in 2014 was inducted into the Hall of Fame. She was also an honoree of the Victims Information Bureau of Suffolk (VIBS), Splashes of Hope and Advancement for Commerce Industry Technology (ACIT). She received an honorary degree in 2009 from the Children’s Center at UCP for her dedication to their education program.

Colleen is a graduate of the Long Island Business Institute and the Dale Carnegie Institute, where she served as a graduate assistant.

She lives with her husband, Steve and celebrating 25 years of marriage this year.  Colleen is the very proud mother of Shannon and Erin and her five beautiful grandchildren.

Janet Longo: Board Member Spotlight

The Rollstone Foundation

Supporting the Adoption of Special Needs Children Worldwide

news

Janet LongoPerseverance and passion color many aspects of Janet Long’s life. A long-distance runner, she constantly pushes not only herself but fellow runners to go the distance, always urging them on with a smile. Her Run for Rollstone is an important annual fundraiser for the organization.  In her work as an Acquisitions Supervisor with the Suffolk County Department of Economic Development & Planning Division of Real Estate, Janet’s role is to purchase land for drinking water protection, parkland and farmland development rights, a task she undertakes with diligence and dedication to environmental and economic responsibility. Here she shares her perspective on the impact Rollstone Foundation has had on her.

Q: What drew you to the Rollstone Foundation?

A: I was so impressed that there were people out there willing to adopt children with special needs, something I didn’t think I could ever do.  They are truly angels on this earth. I knew I could raise funds to help them, so I started my Run for Rollstone fundraising in 2012, and joined the Board in 2013.

Q: How has being so involved with Rollstone changed you?

A: It truly puts everything in perspective and helps me to keep focused on what really matters in this life….helping other people. I’ve been so blessed to have so many people in my life — family, friends and acquaintances — be so generous and support this incredible foundation.  Once people are aware of what we do, they are always willing to support us.

Q: As a member of the Grant Committee, you see firsthand the plight of these children. Tell us about that experience.

A: Being on that committee is actually what’s most challenging and most rewarding. This group chooses who will be getting grant money and who won’t. I’ve cried all the way home after more than a handful of those meetings. Truly heart wrenching.

Q: What do you want others to know about Rollstone?

A: I’d like the world to know about these amazing families doing God’s work and about this grass roots foundation trying to help bring these children home.  Often, the child being adopted, is a matter of life or death.

Frank Maffei: Board Member Spotlight

The Rollstone Foundation

Supporting the Adoption of Special Needs Children Worldwide

news

Sharing the Spirit of Rollstone

Frank MaffeiThe 2017 Rollstone Foundation Honoree Frank Maffei personifies humility, but his impact on the organization and the children and families it serves is powerful. A partner at the law firm of Jakubowski, Robertson, Goldsmith, Maffei and Tartaglia LLP in St. James, New York, Frank began his career in public service as an Assistant District Attorney for Suffolk County. Altruism characterizes his professional and personal life – in addition to serving on the Rollstone Foundation Board, Frank is current Vice President and former President of The Lions Club of the Islips, a volunteer for St. Mary’s parish Outreach offering free legal service to those with financial challenges. For the past decade, he and his law partners provide scholarships to students in five area school districts. Now in his seventh year on the Rollstone Board, where he is a member of the Grant Committee, Frank shares the rewarding – and often heart-wrenching — experience of working with this unique organization.

Q: Why did you join the Board of the Rollstone Foundation?

A: I have personally seen through adoptions in my extended family the absolute joy that occurs when families are united. Add the challenges of uniting special needs children with their family, and Rollstone and its members perform an incredibly rewarding and valuable service. This positive energy and dynamic drew me in immediately.

Q: What impact has being a Rollstone Board member had on you?

A: It has made me realize that my family and I are truly blessed and that we should share those blessings. I have been awed by the compassion and strength of families that adopt special needs children and the absolute courage and perseverance of these special children.

Meeting the families and children whose applications I have reviewed makes the experience with Rollstone vividly real and, quite frankly, humbling. I am a much softer person than before I joined the board. I am thankful for that.

Q: What do you find most challenging about your involvement with Rollstone?

A: I am a member of the Grant Committee. In that roll, three fellow Board members and I must face the financial realities of a charitable organization and recommend to the full Board that we say no to many worthy applications.

Q: No easy task to be sure. What do you find most rewarding?

A: Saying yes!

Q: What do you want others to know about Rollstone?

A: That through all our hard work to raise and distribute grants we have helped many families. At the same time, being a member of the Rollstone Board exposes me to the tremendous unmet need that exists. The number of applications consistently exceeds our ability to provide these much-needed funds to help special needs children. We need help. We need your help.

Rollstone is made up of incredibly dedicated, caring, compassionate people who I believe started out that way and it’s infectious! The contact with this vast world of special needs children and those who aid them has made all of us appreciate our blessings and has motivated us to help more. Rollstone not only empowers those it helps through the grants it distributes, it empowers all those who see it up close. The spirit and generosity of Rollstone has a life of its own. We love sharing it with as many people as possible.
